Caryl Churchill

Personal Information
Carol Churchill was born in London, and immigrated to Canada with her family in the late 1940’s. At the age of 18 she returned to Britain to study at Oxford, where her first two stage plays were produced. In the 1960’s she wrote a number of plays for radio, including The Ants (1962), Lovesick (1966) and Identical Twins (1968). Her association with the Royal Court Theatre began in the early 1970s with Owners (1972), a satire on capitalism. This was followed by such plays as Light Shining in Buckinghamshire (1976), Cloud Nine (1979), Fen (1983), Top Girls (1982), Softcops (1984) and Serious Money (1987), an award-winning satirical view of the London Stock Exchange after the "Big Bang" of 1986. Churchill has also written for television, notably Turkish Delight (1973), The Legion Hall Bombing (1978), and Crimes (1981). Her plays of the 1990s include Mad Forest (1990), set in Romania, Lives of the Great Poisoners (1991), and The Skriker (1994), a supernatural tale that incorporated mime, dance, and the music of composer Judith Weir
