Anna Deavere Smith

Personal Information
Anna Deavere Smith has won numerous awards, among them two Obies, two Tony nominations and a MacArthur fellowship. She was runner up for the Pulitzer Prize for her play Fires In the Mirror.
Most recently Smith ended a successful New York run of her newest one-woman play Let Me Down Easy. Let Me Down Easy is a part of her “On The Road: A Search For American Character” series. The series was created in 1981, and it explores American character and our multifaceted cultural identity. This series is her core creative and intellectual enterprise. It has taken Smith to environments as diverse as Los Angeles following the 1992 riots, Crown Heights Brooklyn, to portray tensions between Blacks and Jews, both the Republican and Democratic Presidential campaigns in 1996 and the Clinton White House. For the latest play in the series, Let Me Down Easy, she did interviews on three continents. Currently she appears as hospital administrator Gloria Akalitus on Showtime’s new hit show “Nurse Jackie”. She was National Security advisor Nancy McNally on “The West Wing”. She was a series regular on “Presidio Med”, and appeared on “The Practice”. Films include Rachel Getting Married, The American President, Philadelphia, The Human Stain, Life Support, and Dave. Her books include Talk To Me and Letters to A Young Artist. She is founding director of Artists Without Boundaries, a center for artistic excellence that addresses social change. She is Artist in Residence at the Center for American Progress in Washington, D.C. She is a professor at New York University. She is the recipient of many honorary degrees including those from Juilliard, Barnard, Northwestern, and Wesleyan.
